I Prayed with All my heart – And My Parents still got divorced

I Prayed With All My Heart — And My Parents Still Got Divorced

Have you ever prayed for something urgent — not selfish, not sinful, just necessary — and heard nothing back? I’ve watched more than a few people walk away from God for exactly that reason.

A friend of mine prayed for months that his parents wouldn’t divorce. They did anyway, and he decided a God who “couldn’t even answer that” wasn’t worth believing in. I’ve seen others walk the same road after losing someone they loved. If you’ve been there, I won’t try to talk you out of the pain. But I do want to show you a bigger picture underneath it — one that might actually give you a reason to lean on God harder, not walk away.

Why do painful things happen to us?

A figure in quiet sorrow
Grief isn’t evidence God is absent — Scripture names its actual source.

God made a good world, free of suffering. It was humanity’s own rebellion that brought a curse in, and pain came with it. My sorrow, and yours, exists because people — all of us, myself included — have broken God’s commands. It isn’t that God filled the world with grief; we did, by disobeying Him.

If people kept the commands not to kidnap or kill, no child would be taken. If husbands loved their wives the way Christ loved the church, divorce wouldn’t exist. The pain in our lives isn’t caused by God — it’s caused by our failure to keep His commands.

God never promised to remove the trial

Scripture doesn’t promise God will lift this curse on our schedule. If anything, it says suffering intensifies as history moves toward its end — and it falls hardest on those who follow Him.

“For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.” Matthew 24:21 (KJV)

In Luke 12, a man interrupts Jesus with a completely fair request — his brother had stolen his inheritance, and the law was on his side. Jesus doesn’t fix it. He rebukes him instead: “a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth” (Luke 12:15, KJV). Jesus’ concern wasn’t the man’s finances. It was his soul.

The one thing God actually promised

Why did Jesus go to the cross? Not so we’d be wealthy, or comfortable, or get everything we’ve ever wished for. He went to secure one thing: eternal life for His people.

“But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” John 20:31 (KJV)

The 1983 film Adam, based on the real abduction of six-year-old Adam Walsh, and the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting that took twenty children’s lives, are the kind of tragedies that shake even sincere believers’ faith. I can only imagine that grief. But if we truly believe God’s promise, and a child who received Christ is now gone from this world — that child is somewhere with no sorrow, no pain, ever again. That’s not a reason to be angry at God. It’s a reason to fix our hope on Him.

A note on Hebrews 11: the chapter’s second half praises believers who refused deliverance from suffering “that they might obtain a better resurrection” (v.35) — holding out for something better than rescue in this life. It’s a striking picture of what real faith values most.

Who actually owns your life?

God is the Creator and owner of everything — including us. An owner’s possessions exist for the owner, not the other way around. As our owner, nothing God does with what belongs to Him is unjust, even suffering we can’t explain. The real problem isn’t God’s sovereignty — it’s that we, His possession, keep refusing to obey Him.

What we should actually pray for

God didn’t abandon a humanity that had turned against Him — He sent His Son instead. So maybe our most urgent prayers shouldn’t be for our own circumstances at all, but for the people we love to actually meet Him. That means giving God our lives, not just our requests — knowing Him more, and praying urgently for the right thing.

If you’ve walked away from God over a prayer He didn’t answer the way you wanted, I hope this offered more than sympathy — a fuller picture of what He actually promised, and why He’s still worth trusting with everything, including the prayers still unanswered.
