The Seventy Weeks: The Year Messiah Had to Die

Prophecy as a falsifiable test

The Seventy Weeks

When was the Messiah supposed to die? A prophecy named a year. Astronomy confirmed it.

Daniel 9:24–27 Reading time 7 min Essay

Daniel 9:24–27 — seventy weeks, divided 7 + 62 + 1.
01

Prophecy is the most honest test a religion can offer

If the future is genuinely open, prophecy is impossible. Lucky guesses happen, but writing down a verifiable claim and having it land centuries later is a different kind of event.

So let us test one. Daniel chapter 9 contains what is usually called the Seventy Weeks prophecy. It states, in numbers, when the Messiah would appear and when he would be cut off. It asks for no religious sentiment. A calculator and an astronomical table are enough.

02

The text

Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.

And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary…

Daniel 9:25–26

Three things are specified.

A starting point

A decree to rebuild Jerusalem.

A duration

7 weeks + 62 weeks = 69 weeks.

An endpoint

The Messiah appears, and afterward is cut off.

03

Why “weeks” means years

The Hebrew word is shavua (שָבוּע), meaning “a unit of seven.” It can mean seven days or seven years. The word alone does not decide.

Daniel decides it himself. In Daniel 10:2 he says he mourned “three full weeks” — and there, uniquely, the Hebrew adds the word yamim, “days”: literally weeks of days. He does not add it in chapter 9.

In other words, Daniel marked the unit when he meant days. Chapter 9 is unmarked.

The context agrees. Daniel 9 opens with Daniel meditating on Jeremiah’s prophecy of seventy years (Daniel 9:2). A man thinking in years was answered in sevens of years.

69 weeks = 483 years
04

The starting point: one decree out of four

Scripture records four Persian decrees connected to the return.

Decree Date Concerns
Cyrus (Ezra 1:1–4)538 BCthe temple
Darius (Ezra 6:1–12)520 BCthe temple
Artaxerxes, 7th year (Ezra 7:11–26)458 BCtemple worship
Artaxerxes, 20th year (Nehemiah 2:1–8)445/444 BCthe city and its wall

Daniel did not say temple. He said “the street… and the wall” (9:25). That is a city, not a sanctuary. Only the fourth decree qualifies.

Nehemiah 2:1 dates it to “the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes.” Artaxerxes I came to the throne in 465 BC, so his twentieth year falls in 445 or 444 BC, depending on whether the years are counted the Persian way or the Jewish way.

We will leave that one-year uncertainty open. It turns out not to matter.

05

A prophetic year is 360 days

This is not a rule invented to make Daniel work. Scripture fixes it twice, at both ends of the canon.

Genesis — the first book

The flood begins on the seventeenth day of the second month (7:11) and the ark rests on the seventeenth day of the seventh month (8:4). Between them, Scripture counts 150 days (7:24, 8:3).

Five months, 150 days — thirty days to a month.

Revelation — the last book

The same span is called forty-two months (11:2, 13:5) and 1,260 days (11:3, 12:6).

Forty-two thirty-day months make exactly 1,260. No other month length works.

The first book of the Bible and the last use the same unit.

483 × 360 = 173,880 days — about 476 solar years
06

The calculation

Starting 445 BC
AD 32
Starting 444 BC
AD 33

There is no year zero between 1 BC and AD 1, so one year is subtracted in crossing over.

Daniel’s prophecy therefore points to the window AD 32–33. Now the test begins.

07

Astronomy narrows it to one year

Jesus died at Passover — Nisan 14 — and that day was a Friday. But the phases of the moon can be computed. Reconstructing Nisan 14 across Pilate’s governorship (AD 26–36) gives this.

YearNisan 14 (Julian)Day
AD 307 AprilFriday
AD 3127 MarchTuesday
AD 3214 AprilMonday
AD 333 AprilFriday
AD 3424 MarchWednesday

Only AD 30 and AD 33 have a Friday Passover. Overlay the two constraints.

Diagram: Daniel's window AD 32-33 intersected with astronomy's AD 30 or 33
Two independent constraints. One overlap.
The intersection
One year satisfies both. AD 33.

Daniel is a sixth-century BC Hebrew document. The lunar reconstruction is twentieth-century physics. Neither consults the other.

This also means the widely quoted “AD 32” calculation cannot stand. Passover in AD 32 fell on a Monday. The classic works that produced that date need correcting on this point, and it is better to say so plainly than to be corrected later.

08

And the second half of verse 26

Daniel also recorded what would happen after the Messiah was cut off.

…and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary…

In AD 70 the legions of Titus took Jerusalem and burned the temple. It has never been rebuilt.

Note the order. The Messiah is cut off first; the temple falls afterward. Daniel did not reverse it — which places a deadline on the whole prophecy. No candidate appearing after AD 70 can satisfy it.

09

A Jewish man who met Jesus through this calculation

Jacob Damkani, Messianic Jew
Jacob Damkani.

Jacob Damkani was a disillusioned young Israeli with no interest in religion. A Christian opened Daniel 9 in front of him — his own nation’s scripture, read in his own synagogue — and he found a calculation whose endpoint carried a name his people had refused for two thousand years.

He now runs a ministry taking that name to the people most determined to reject it.

10

Could this be coincidence?

Daniel was written centuries before Jesus. It fixes a starting point and a duration. The result lands on the only year astronomy allows.

And in that year, a man was received into Jerusalem as a king and executed days later, having gained nothing.

“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”
