The Pharisees Were the Good Guys

The Gospel of the Cross

The Pharisees Were the Good GuysAnd that is the whole problem

They were the most admired men in Judea. Eight hundred of them died on crosses rather than let the Law be broken. Jesus told them they would not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Ask an English speaker what a Pharisee was and you will get some version of the same answer. A religious bully. A hypocrite in expensive robes. A sanctimonious official who loved rules more than people. The word has become an insult in English, which tells you how settled the picture is.

That picture is almost entirely wrong — and getting it wrong makes the cross unintelligible. If the Pharisees were simply corrupt men, then the gospel is a story about good people beating bad people. That is not what the New Testament says.

The Pharisees were, by every measure a human being can apply, the finest men in the country.

Eight hundred crosses

The movement began after 167 BC, when Antiochus IV desecrated the Jerusalem temple and made owning a Torah scroll a capital offence. Their name says what they were for: Hebrew perushim, “separated ones.” Their diagnosis of the national catastrophe was theological — we were conquered because we did not keep the Law — and their remedy followed with total consistency. Never again.

They meant it literally. In 103 BC the Hasmonean king Alexander Jannaeus took both the throne and the high priesthood, and the Pharisees publicly disputed his fitness for the priestly office. To a king with an army. A six-year civil war followed.

In 88 BC he settled accounts.

As he was feasting with his concubines, in the sight of all the city, he ordered about eight hundred of them to be crucified.

Josephus, Antiquities 13.380

This is not devotional embellishment. Josephus reports it twice, and a scroll recovered from Cave 4 at Qumran describes the same ruler as a “Lion of Wrath” who hangs men alive. Two hostile ancient sources, one account.

The heroism was not confined to crises. A Pharisee rose before dawn, prayed at fixed hours, ate nothing outside the purity laws, kept a Sabbath that governed how far he walked, and held large portions of the Hebrew Scriptures in memory. Jesus Himself concedes the tithing in the middle of a rebuke.

Think of the people your own culture holds up as morally serious — someone who resisted a dictatorship and never recanted, or gave up a career to run a hospital in Gabon. That is the register the Pharisees occupied. Not the villains of the story. Its heroes.

And one of them wrote his own credentials down.

…as touching the law, a Pharisee; concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.

Philippians 3:5–6 (KJV)

Paul is not being ironic. Measured against the written Law, he could not be faulted, and nobody in Jerusalem was in a position to contradict him.

So why did Jesus condemn them?

Because He had already set the entry requirement, and it was devastating:

Except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:20 (KJV)

He named the highest standard anyone present could conceive of — and made it the floor. Which means the scribes and Pharisees themselves were not going to make it.

James Tissot, Woe unto You, Scribes and Pharisees
James Tissot, Woe unto You, Scribes and Pharisees (1886–1894), Brooklyn Museum.

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones… Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

Matthew 23:27–28 (KJV)

That image is sharper than it looks. Whitewashing a tomb was not decoration — graves were marked with lime before Passover so pilgrims would not step on them by accident and become ceremonially unclean. The white coating was a warning label. It existed to announce that death was underneath.

And notice the concession inside the accusation: ye outwardly appear righteous unto men. He does not deny it. To any human observer they genuinely were righteous. We judge by what is visible; we have no other option.

God has another option.

Two standards

James Tissot, The Pharisee and the Publican
Tissot, The Pharisee and the Publican. Two men, one temple, two prayers.

Every human moral system measures conduct, because conduct is all we can see. God’s standard begins one layer further in: the contempt you felt this morning and did not act on is already in the ledger. Under human law, none of it is actionable. Under God’s law, it is the offence itself.

Jesus made it a two-sentence story. A Pharisee and a tax collector pray in the temple. The Pharisee thanks God he is not like other men — he fasts twice a week, he tithes everything.

Here is the detail almost everyone misses. Every factual claim he makes is true. He is not lying and he is not exaggerating. He goes home unjustified anyway, and the tax collector — a collaborator who defrauded his own countrymen — goes home justified.

The problem was never that his record was false. The problem was that he was standing on it.

The only righteousness on offer

So return to Paul, holding a flawless record and knowing exactly what it is worth. He calls it dung — the Greek word is skybalon, refuse, what gets thrown out. He chose the coarse word deliberately, and applied it to the most impressive moral record available to a first-century Jew: his own.

In its place he received something he did not manufacture. Christ kept the Law no one else could keep, died as the representative of a guilty race, and rose. Everyone joined to Him by faith is credited with His record — His obedience, His innocence, His righteousness. Not borrowed. Transferred.

That is why the criminal dying on the next cross could be told today. He had nothing to offer and no time to reform. He admitted his guilt, declared Jesus innocent, and asked. He was given everything belonging to the Man beside him.

Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

John 6:28–29 (KJV)

They asked for a list. He gave them a Person.

The mirror

The point was never that one first-century faction was uniquely wicked. It is the reverse, and it is far more disturbing: the highest righteousness human beings can manufacture, when it finally stands face to face with the real thing, defends itself. That is what happened at the arrest, and it is the same pattern as Cain and Abel — one offering from human labour, one by faith, and murder when the difference was exposed.

Which means the Pharisee is not a historical villain you can safely look down on. He is the best possible version of you — more disciplined, better read, more generous, more courageous — and he did not make it on the strength of his record.

The only real difference is that we have his story written down. We get to see how it ends before we finish living our own.

He had no warning. You have one.

Will you trust your own record, or His?
