Can something come from nothing?

What physicists mean by “nothing” — three serious attempts to explain a universe without a cause, and the word each of them has to redefine first.

The Kalam argument rests on one premise most people never think to challenge: whatever begins to exist has a cause. The interesting response is not to deny it outright but to argue that the universe is the one exception — that nothingness itself is unstable and produces universes on its own. This is the case three physicists have made, and the point at which each one changes the subject.

This article assumes the companion piece: that the universe began to exist, that the evidence for it accumulated against the wishes of the people gathering it, and that the Borde–Guth–Vilenkin theorem closed the last past-eternal exit in 2003. The word doing all the work

In philosophy, nothing has a settled meaning: no matter, no energy, no space, no time, no laws, no fields, no probabilities. Not an empty room — the absence of the room. It has no properties, because there is nothing there to have them.

In physics, the same word is routinely used for something else: the lowest-energy state of a quantum field in a spacetime governed by physical law. That state is empty in the sense that it contains no particles. It is not empty in the sense that matters to the argument.

Two meanings of “nothing”

Metaphysical nothing — no thing whatsoever. No space, no time, no law, no potential. Not a state; the absence of any state.

Physical vacuum — a state with zero particles but non-zero energy, obeying quantum field theory inside an existing spacetime. Rich in structure, and demonstrably productive.

Every claim that “nothing produces something” moves between these two without marking the transition.

This is not a debating trick invented by apologists. It is the objection that philosophers of physics — including several with no religious commitments — have pressed most consistently, and the one the physicists themselves keep having to answer.

The strongest popular case for a universe from nothing

Argues that empty space, given quantum mechanics and gravity, will inevitably produce matter — and that this dissolves the need for a creator.

Krauss’s physics is not in dispute. In quantum field theory the vacuum is not inert: particle–antiparticle pairs appear and annihilate continuously, and the effects are measurable. The Casimir force between two uncharged plates and the Lamb shift in the hydrogen spectrum are both consequences of vacuum activity. Empty space really does produce particles.

The difficulty arrives when this is offered as an answer to why there is a universe at all. The quantum vacuum is not the absence of everything; it is a specific physical system with a specific energy density, described by specific equations, extended in a spacetime that already exists. Asking why it exists is the original question, unanswered.

Krauss has acknowledged the shift in later interviews, arguing that the philosophical sense of “nothing” is an unproductive concept and that physics should be permitted to redefine it. That is a defensible position about how to do physics. It is not an answer to the Kalam argument — it declines the question rather than resolving it.

Vilenkin: nothing as a mathematical state

Proposed that the universe emerged by quantum tunnelling from a state with no classical spacetime — while stating plainly that a beginning cannot be avoided.

Vilenkin’s model is more careful than the popular version of it. He describes a universe that tunnels into existence from a state without classical space or time, in the way a particle tunnels through a barrier it has insufficient energy to cross. There is no earlier moment, because there is no “earlier.”

What the model still requires is a mathematical framework in which tunnelling is defined: quantum mechanics, a wave function, and a law assigning probabilities to outcomes. A state governed by a probability law is not nothing. It is a highly structured something with no matter in it.

Vilenkin himself has been unusually direct about where this leaves cosmology. He has said that with the BGV theorem in hand, cosmologists can no longer hide behind a past-eternal universe, and that all the evidence points to a beginning. He does not draw a theological conclusion from it. He also does not claim the beginning has been explained away.

Each account begins one step inside the door. The step through the door — from no laws at all to laws — is where the Kalam argument operates, and none of the three addresses it.

Carroll: the question as a category error

The most philosophically serious objection

Holds that the universe may simply be a brute fact, and that demanding a cause for it imports an intuition from inside the universe to a place it does not apply.

Carroll does not attempt to derive a universe from nothing. His argument is that the demand for a cause is itself the error. Causation, he argues, is a useful description of how things behave in time within the universe; the universe as a whole is not an event inside time, so there is no reason to expect it to have a cause. A complete cosmological model that requires no external input is, on this view, a complete explanation.

This is the strongest of the three responses, and it cannot be dismissed by pointing at the word “nothing.” It has to be met on its own terms.

Two things can be said. First, the principle that things do not begin uncaused is not a parochial intuition about middle-sized objects; it is the assumption underlying every scientific investigation ever conducted, including the ones that established the beginning. Suspending it for exactly one case, the case where a cause would be theologically inconvenient, is a large concession to make quietly.

Second, “the universe is a brute fact” is not a discovery. It is a decision to stop asking. That may turn out to be correct, but it is not a rival explanation — it is the absence of one, and it should be presented as such.

The three positions side by side

Set out plainly, the three responses are not three answers to the same question. They are one answer, one deferral and one refusal.

  1. KraussAnswers a different question — how particles arise in an existing vacuum — and applies the answer to the origin of the vacuum itself.
  2. VilenkinAnswers how a universe can begin without a prior moment, while conceding that it began and that quantum law was already in force.
  3. CarrollDeclines the question on principle, holding that the universe needs no cause because it is not the kind of thing that has one.

The problem none of them solves

Even granting a mechanism that produces universes, a second problem remains, and it is the harder one. A universe that permits galaxies, stars and chemistry must begin in a state of extraordinarily low entropy. Almost all possible beginnings do not.

A random fluctuation of the kind Krauss’s vacuum produces is overwhelmingly more likely to yield a small pocket of order than an entire structured cosmos — which is why the Boltzmann brain problem is a genuine embarrassment for fluctuation models rather than a debating point against them. If universes appear by chance, the typical observer is a momentary fluctuation with false memories, not a person in a 13.8-billion-year-old cosmos. We are not that. Something selected the initial conditions.

The Boltzmann brain paradox

In any model where order arises from random fluctuation, small ordered systems are vastly more probable than large ones. The most likely conscious observer is therefore a brief fluctuation, not an embodied one in an old, ordered universe. A model that predicts we should be Boltzmann brains predicts wrongly, and is evidence against itself.

Where this leaves the argument

Nothing here proves the God of the Bible. The Kalam argument was never designed to do that; it establishes a cause, not a person, and the remaining distance is covered by other arguments and by history.

What the three responses do show is the shape of the alternative. To avoid a cause, one must either redefine nothing as something, presuppose the laws whose existence is the question, or declare the question closed. Each of those is a coherent intellectual position. None of them is a simpler explanation than a cause outside time, space and matter.
